ABOUT
Helping singers find freedom, confidence and authenticity in their voice.
For over 20 years, I’ve helped singers develop healthier technique, build confidence, and discover a voice that feels free, expressive and authentic. Whether you sing professionally, perform casually or simply love music and want to improve, my goal is to help you sing with greater ease, confidence and emotional connection.
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Specialization in Classical Singing Performance, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Before becoming a school teacher and vocal coach, I performed at public and private events and spent years immersed in vocal performance and music education.

"Sing your heart out!"
-Val Bastien, OCT (Vocal Coach)
My path as a vocal coach was also shaped by personal experience. Following tonsil surgery early in my career, I experienced vocal challenges that forced me to step away from performance temporarily and re-learn how my voice functioned. That journey led me to study vocal technique and vocal health more deeply while pursuing a career in education. Rebuilding my voice gave me a much deeper understanding of the physical, emotional and technical challenges many singers face — an understanding that continues to create the supportive and individualized approach I bring to my coaching today.
Alongside my work in education and vocal coaching, I spent time interviewing internationally recognized artists including Scott Stapp (Creed), Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge / Slash), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Christina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach), James LaBrie (Dream Theater) and other established rock and metal performers, further expanding my perspective on contemporary vocal performance, artistry and the demands singers face across different musical styles.
At Voice Yourself Singing, singing is about more than hitting notes correctly. It’s about communicating emotion, telling a story, and feeling connected to your voice instead of fighting against it.
Many singers come to me feeling stuck — struggling with tension, limited range, vocal fatigue, inconsistency or lack of confidence. Through personalized coaching, I help students strengthen their technique while developing their unique artistic identity. Lessons are tailored to your individual voice, musical style, and personal goals — whether you sing pop, rock, musical theatre, or contemporary music for personal enjoyment, performance, or semi-professional work.
Together, we work on:
-
Building a stronger, healthier voice
-
Improving vocal control, tone and range
-
Reducing strain and vocal fatigue
-
Developing confidence and performance skills
-
Creating a more authentic emotional connection to singing
My teaching approach combines proven vocal technique with supportive, individualized coaching in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Many of my clients are adults who thought they had “missed their chance” to become better singers — only to discover that real progress is absolutely possible with the right guidance.
Lessons are available both online and in person.
If you're ready to sing with more freedom, confidence and authenticity, I’d love to help you take the next step.
To your vocal success,
Val Bastien, OCT
